Dr. Lawrence C. Stewart
Dr Stewart grew up in the southern tier of New York and received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York prior to pursuing his medical degree and residency training in Ophthalmology at SUNY Upstate Health Science Center. His chief residency year was spent at Upstate Medical Center at The Veterans Administration Hospital Syracuse. And of equal or even more importance, met a fellow medical student who is now his wife of over 30 years Dr Pamela Sunshine, they have three children together.
Professional accomplishments include Board Certification in Ophthalmology, membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, The International Society of Refractive surgery and Medical Societies, both state and local.
Almost 3 decades of eye care have included both medical and surgical treatment of a wide variety of medical and surgical problems of the eyes with a special interest in cataract surgery and management of Glaucoma. After performing over 10,000 cases of standard cataract surgery, laser assisted cataract surgery has also been incorporated into the practice. Treatment of Glaucoma includes many thousands of cases of medical, laser and surgical treatments.
Dr Stewart is proud to have been one of the founding members, project coordinator of planning and construction, as well as first medical director of the Specialty Surgery Center of Central New York, by far the largest provider of eye surgery in the greater Syracuse area. He was also one of the founding members of Laservue of CNY, one of the premier providers of Lasik refractive surgery in Syracuse.
Community service has also been an important part of Dr Stewart’s life at the local, national and international levels. This has included trips to both Central and South American to provide eye surgery to the poor, as well as participation in Operation Sight which provides free eye surgery for the uninsured in the US. He made multiple trips to New Orleans to help in recovery efforts with Habitat For Humanity and Operation Southern Comfort after Hurricane Katrina. Support has been given to local city schools with science projects, also work with Meals on Wheels, and leadership with local scouting organizations. He is currently serving as a board member and Vice President of Operation Northern Comfort providing services for families in crisis in Syracuse and the surrounding areas and also a board member of Aurora of Central New York, an organization providing rehabilitation services to the blind and visually handicapped.
